Making a Difference in the Belmont Public Schools

The FBE awards grants to educators in the Belmont Public Schools to implement innovative programs and advanced technology that result in richer and deeper learning experiences for students. Grants are awarded for a diverse array of projects, from small grants that benefit a single classroom to large programs designed to benefit students in an entire grade, school, or district-wide. Grants are awarded in all school curriculum areas, special initiatives, and ITI professional development. To date, close to $4.25 million has been awarded in grants and assistance since 1993, and more than 900 projects have been financed.

5 Minutes Ago Morning Show, 2021

The FBE purchased recording equipment to produce the popular high school morning show started by and featuring high school students during the pandemic as a way to include, connect, and engage all members of the high school community.

Grant Highlights

  • Utilizing a Conference to Engage Students in Controversial Current Events, 2023

    Award: $750.00
    School: BHS Social Studies Department

    This grant supported the professional growth of social studies teachers at the 2023 National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. The teachers then incorporated innovative teaching practices around teaching controversial current events into their courses.

  • Using Foundational Building Blocks to Reach New Heights in Literacy, 2023

    Award: $8,145.00
    School: All BPS Elementary Schools

    The purpose of this grant was to confirm our commitment to early literacy acquisition and instructional principles, to continue to foster alignment across all BPS Elementary Schools, and to establish a shared understanding of evidenced-based practices.

  • Robot Crawler Kits for Engineering Class, 2021

    Award: $4,038
    School: Chenery Middle School

    A Rapid Response Gradnt: At the height of fully remote learning during the pandemic, the FBE purchased 380 Robot Crawler kits to provide every sixth grader at Chenery a project-based, hands-on learning, remote engineering class experience to explore friction, materials, mechanical energy, experiment with variables, testing, and redesign.

  • Mental Health Literacy in 8th Grade, 2021

    Amount awarded: $5550
    School: Chenery Middle School

    After returning to school in-person, the FBE funded a $5550 grant to the 8th grade ELA department to purchase each 8th Grade student new books to enable teachers to address and discuss mental health issues and offer information to help students understand mental illness.

  • Recess Equipment

    Amount awarded: $1,690
    School: Butler Elementary School

    A Rapid Response Grant: During the pandemic students were required to social distance. This grant replaced worn out recess equipment such as balls, jump ropes, hula hoops, intended to maximize in-person recess time while hybrid students are at school, reduce social isolation that many students experience, and increase students' overall social emotional wellbeing.

  • Elmo Camera

    Amount awarded: $661
    School: Belmont High School

    For Biology, Neurobiology, and Anatomy and Physiology Classes, the purchase of an Elmo camera to allow students to see demonstrations of labs and dissections given that students are currently unable to perform labs on their own or in groups because of the current remote and hybrid teaching schedules.

  • Chinese Calligraphy with Chenery Students, 2021

    Amount Awarded: $432
    School: Chenery Middle School

    FBE purchased calligraphy materials to provide an enrichment experience for the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Chinese Language Program at CMS.

  • Social and Emotional Learning, 2015-17

    Award Totals: $63,000
    A District-Wide Focus

    Recognizing the importance and need for professional development in the area of Social-Emotional Learning for all staff district-wide to support the SEL for students, the FBE invested significant funds to support the training in the knowledge and practices of Social-Emotional Learning including instruction in facilitation skills.

  • Diversity Week Programming: Assemblies with Urban Improv, 2017

    Award: $3,000
    School: Belmont High School

    This grant funded several speakers and workshops for Diversity week at the High School. The week included a number of guest speakers, workshops and panel discussions, including three workshop sessions with Urban Improv focused on providing students with tools and strategies for thinking about and discussing race.

  • Senior Capstone, 2017

    Award: $2,720
    School: Belmont High School

    This grant supported books and materials for the Senior Capstone - a reinvention of the senior thesis for a new generation of learners in order to increase student choice and voice. Several senior teachers collaborated to develop the Senior Capstone, a year-long, multi-genre investigation of an inquiry question of the student’s choosing that is tangible, practical, intellectually challenging, and emotionally engaging.

  • Creating with Peter Reynolds

    Award: $3,995
    School: Burbank Elementary School

    “Be brave, be creative, never stop drawing, and use your talents to make the world a better place,” declared Peter H. Reynolds to the more than 450 students, community members, and staff at Burbank Elementary School on November 1st. Spearheaded by Burbank art teacher, Nicole Pond, and funded through a generous grant from the Foundation for Belmont Education, students were treated to a hands-on glimpse into the creative process of renowned local author and illustrator Peter H. Reynolds. Mr. Reynolds is the creator of such works as ish and the dot and illustrator of the well-known Judy Moody series.

  • Digital Art and Animation Program, 2019

    Amount Awarded: $10,575
    School: Belmont High School

    Before there was a new high school and a MAC lab, students enrolled in the the Media Arts Program relied on two iPads to create Digital Art until 2019 when the FBE funded a grant for five iMac computers, which provided students access to industry-standard technology and software; learning the tools and techniques that professionals use.

  • Garden Classroom, 2015

    Amount Awarded: $1,000
    School: Burbank Elementary School

    This project engaged the entire school community and involved collaboration with key partners in landscape/garden design, planning, and installation. Teachers and students use the Garden Classroom for activities directly related to their grade-level curriculum. The Garden Classroom formally opened in June 2015.

  • iPad Technology, 2016

    Amount Awarded: $95,805 + $17,700
    School: Belmont High School

    Purchase of technology-based learning tools (iPad technology), and training to staff in 11th grade and beyond in iPad related curriculum opportunities, and hiring of a consultant to provide teacher support during this transition.

  • T3 =Technology Tools for Teaching Campaign, 2008

    Launched in January 2008, the T3 campaign was a multi-year $600,000 capital campaign to meet the technology needs of the Belmont Public Schools through the installation of SMART BoardTM technology in grades 4-12 and a new foreign language lab at the High School.

    With SMART Boards in their classrooms, Belmont Public School students experience computer technology as a powerful tool for learning, a tool that they can manipulate to explore difficult concepts. In total, more than 100 SMART Boards were purchased installed in classrooms across the Belmont Public Schools.
